Why I Married a Sickle Cell Warrior | Rev Augustine Odion Ehimen’s Untold Story

This presentation originated from the background of the intense prolonged agony my mother went through during her childhood and adult years in life. She was born like any other normal child with all the physical, mental, emotional, and psychological characteristics seemingly whole and functional. But as she grew, unexpected health issues began to surface about her. She began to experience a kind of general unrest in her entire body system. She was often totally restless and in pain. Her parents sought for solution in various ways. At last, medical tests and analysis establish the fact that my mother has a blood disease called sickle cell anemia which the doctors confirm as incurable. It could only be managed for life to continue.

Invariably, she had to develop the strength of endurance while divine intervention was still being hoped for. Meanwhile the administrations of regular drugs were very crucial to her survival. The mystery of it all is that I was only three months old when the divine hand brought deliverance to my mother’s long night of sorrow. Mummy kept relating this experience to us while growing up. So, let Mummy open up a little window into this ordeal as she speaks: “ I was born a sickler from my mother’s womb … that I was unable to carry out any duty allotted to me by my parents, the pains come from time to time … so severe as if I am going to die the next day… the pains come with crises breaking of the cells and I perceive the odor of my blood, all the joints are so painful, very tired to clean up myself, very difficult to breath, eat, bathe; hardly I sit down without holding my legs and my chest with my hands. My teachers bring me home from school … always fall by the wayside … some good Samaritans or my mother would meet me there and carry me home… whenever the crises comes, there would be shortage of blood, loss of appetite, body weakness, toothache and cold; it would keep me inactive, loss of memory as if am not existing; sometimes I die completely and resurrect again; I preferred dying to living, then I decided to commit suicide, but God called me with a loud voice not to do so. My first baby boy was only three months old when the power of God came on me in my house and healed me instantly. This was in 1988”.

As a Christian family, we feel so grateful and indebted to God for reaching out to my mother in His eternal mercy. Also, we feel empathetic to people who are challenged with similar dilemma in life. Consequently, this episode inclined us to want to identify with persons confronted with serious health problems. It has become a conscience in the psyche of the family; we just want to say thank you to God. The deliverance was purely supernatural and dumbfounding.

Along the years, my parents have tried to touch people in distress through missionary endeavors. They go with herbal medicines, food and other household items as they share the Word of God with people. And God has been faithful meeting needs of people that are almost drowned in the sorrows of life. Surely, the task is enormous and daunting. But more efforts have to be made in alleviating human suffering.

Obviously this is philanthropic work that demands many hands: individuals, corporate groups, health professionals, donor agencies, counselors and volunteer helpers can join our team in order to reach a greater number of humans crying out for succor. It is hoped that a larger and more effective non-governmental humane agency will emerge from this little work. It is believed that service to others is the most valuable legacy that anyone can bestow on posterity. Indeed, what we give away is really what we have kept in God’s eternal safe-deposit vault. Don’t hesitate, partner with us in this noble mission.
